What Raychem Insulating Gloves Are
Raychem Electrical Insulating Gloves are specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect workers from electric shock and arc hazards when working on or near energized electrical systems.
They are typically made from natural rubber latex, which provides excellent dielectric (insulating) properties while still maintaining comfort and flexibility for handling tools.
Safety Standards:
- These gloves are typically tested and certified to internationally recognized standards such as IEC 60903:2014, EN 60903:2003, and ASTM F2675 (for arc resistance).
- Arc ratings for composite gloves indicate energy levels (in cal/cm²) they can withstand during an arc flash.
How to Choose the Right Gloves:
Based on Working Voltage
- Use Class 00/0 for low-voltage distribution and common service panels (typically ≤1 000 V).
- Go Class 1–2 for industrial systems and medium-voltage equipment.
- Class 3–4 for high-voltage transmission or heavy electrical infrastructure.
- Always select the glove rated above the system voltage you’ll be exposed to.
Testing, Maintenance & Safety:
- Dielectric testing: After you put gloves into service, they typically must be retested every 6 months to confirm insulation hasn’t degraded.
- Inspection: Always visually inspect gloves before each use for cracks, cuts, or discoloration, and discard if damaged.
- Mechanical protection: Pure rubber gloves protect against electrical hazards but not cuts or abrasions; leather over-gloves are worn over rubber gloves for mechanical protection.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, ozone sources (like motors), and chemicals.
