Hydraulic Cable Spiking Tool
A Hydraulic Cable Spiking Tool is a critical safety instrument used in high-voltage electrical environments. It ensures worker safety by positively identifying dead cables before cutting, using a controlled and remote-operated spiking mechanism. It is widely used by utility companies, electrical contractors, and maintenance teams to prevent accidents and ensure safe cable handling.
Overall, it is a robust, reliable, and essential safety tool that protects electrical workers by ensuring safe working conditions.
Description
The SAPSONS Hydraulic Cable Spiking Tool is a specialized electrical safety device used to confirm that a power cable is completely de-energized before any maintenance or repair work is carried out.
The SAPSONS Hydraulic Cable Spiking Tool is designed for low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) power cables to ensure the absence of electrical current, thereby protecting technicians from accidental electric shock or arc faults.
It works by mechanically piercing (spiking) the cable using a hardened chisel driven by hydraulic force. If the cable is still live, the act of spiking will cause a controlled fault, indicating the presence of voltage—thus preventing unsafe cutting.
⚙️ How It Works :
- The tool is positioned around the cable.
- The operator activates the hydraulic system (often from a safe distance).
- The spike is driven through the cable.
- If the cable is live, a fault occurs and protection systems trip.
- If no reaction occurs, the cable is confirmed de-energized.
Construction & Components :
The tool has a robust and reliable hydraulic design, consisting of:
- A hand-operated hydraulic pump
- A hydraulic cylinder connected via hose
- A hardened alloy steel chisel attached to the piston
- A rectangular tubular steel frame for mounting on the cable
- Clamping mechanism with threaded rods for firm positioning
- A separate earthing cable (~6 m) with earthing rod for grounding safety
Working Principle :
- The tool is securely clamped onto the cable.
- The hydraulic pump is operated manually.
- Hydraulic pressure drives the chisel into the cable.
- The chisel penetrates the sheath, insulation, and reaches the conductor.
- This confirms whether the cable is live or dead before cutting or jointing.
Purpose & Applications :
- Ensures electrical safety before maintenance
- Used during cable repair, jointing, and termination
- Mandatory safety step for 11 kV / 33 kV cable systems
- Prevents accidents caused by mistakenly cutting live cables
Key Features :
- Hydraulic operation for controlled force
- High-strength chisel for effective penetration
- Safe grounding arrangement
- Heavy-duty construction for field use
- Simple and reliable operation
