Raychem Polymeric Surge Arrester

MV Surge Arrester upto 45kV for substation protection from lightening and switching over voltages. In past few years, almost all high-voltage networks used MO arresters. However, in medium-voltage networks, a substantial number of conventional gapped arresters (SiC resistors and series spark gaps) were installed until a few years ago. Today MO (Metal-Oxide) arresters without spark gaps have gained popularity. Networks require improved protection level and better performance in polluted environments. The switch to polymeric housings made it possible to do without the previously necessary spark gaps. Polymeric housings are reliable against ingress of moisture and provide minimal risk of failures (violent shattering of the housing). MVSA are manufactured using high quality MOV blocks which display excellent thermal and current handling characteristics due to guaranteed homogeneity of the varistor volume.  In the wrap design surge arresters, the MOV blocks are wrapped with fiberglass ribbons impregnated with epoxy resin to create stacks of MOV blocks.

Description

A Raychem Polymeric Surge Arrester is a protective electrical device used in power systems (substations, transformers, transmission lines) to protect equipment from lightning strikes and switching over-voltage surges. It safely diverts high voltage surges to ground, preventing damage to insulation and equipment.

  1. What is a Raychem Polymeric Surge Arrester?

A polymeric surge arrester manufactured by Raychem RPG uses silicone/polymer housing and metal-oxide varistors (MOV) to limit surge voltage.

When a lightning or switching surge occurs:

  • The arrester conducts excess current to earth
  • It limits the voltage across equipment
  • After the surge, it returns to high resistance state.
  1. Main Components

Typical construction includes:

  1. ZnO Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) blocks – absorb surge energy
  2. Polymeric silicone housing – weatherproof insulation
  3. Aluminium end fittings – mechanical strength
  4. Fiberglass/epoxy wrap – structural support
  5. Ground terminal – discharge path to earth.
  1. Key Features
  • Gapless metal-oxide technology
  • Hydrophobic silicone housing (resistant to pollution & moisture)
  • Low residual voltage
  • High energy handling capability
  • Maintenance-free design
  • Safe non-shattering failure mode
  • Tested according to IEC 60099-4 standard.
  1. Applications

Used in electrical power systems such as:

  • Substations
  • Power transformers
  • Distribution feeders
  • Transmission lines
  • Cable terminations
  • Industrial electrical systems

They help reduce outages and protect expensive equipment from lightning and switching surges.
