Heat Shrink Straight Through Joints
Raychem Heat Shrink Straight Through Joints are cable jointing systems used to connect two power cables in a straight line while maintaining electrical continuity, insulation, and environmental protection. These joints are widely used for low, medium, and high-voltage power cables in industrial, utility, and underground distribution networks.
Raychem joints also use triple-extruded elastomeric technology, which improves flexibility, thermal performance, and long-term reliability under varying operating conditions.
Description
Raychem Heat Shrink Straight Through Joints are cable jointing kits used to connect two power cables end-to-end while maintaining electrical continuity, insulation, mechanical strength, and environmental sealing. These joints are widely used in low-voltage (LV), medium-voltage (MV), and high-voltage (HV) power distribution systems for XLPE, PVC, rubber, and PILC cables.
Main Features :
- Heat-shrinkable insulating tubes and sleeves
- Excellent electrical insulation and stress control
- Moisture-proof and corrosion-resistant sealing
- Suitable for copper or aluminium conductors
- Fast and reliable installation
- High mechanical and thermal performance
- Suitable for armoured and unarmoured cables
Construction and Working :
The joint consists of several heat-shrinkable components that shrink tightly over the cable when heated. The system typically includes:
- Mechanical or compression connector
- Stress control tubing
- Insulation tubing
- Metallic shielding (copper mesh/springs)
- Outer sealing sleeve with adhesive coating
When heat is applied, the tubing shrinks and the adhesive melts, forming a tight environmental seal around the cable joint. This prevents ingress of moisture, dust, and chemicals while restoring insulation and shielding properties.
Electrical Stress Control :
Raychem joints use specially designed stress-control tubing and patches to distribute the electric field uniformly across the connector and insulation screen ends. This minimizes partial discharge and improves long-term reliability, especially in medium-voltage applications.
Triple Extruded Elastomeric Technology :
A key feature of Raychem MV joints is the triple-layer joint body:
- Outer conductive layer
- Insulating layer
- Inner elastomeric layer
This design provides strong insulation, flexibility, and excellent thermal performance, allowing the joint to withstand thermal expansion and contraction during operation.
Applications :
Raychem Heat Shrink Straight Through Joints are used in:
- Underground cable networks
- Industrial power systems
- Utilities and substations
- Renewable energy projects
- Infrastructure and commercial installations
- Repair and extension of power cables
Advantages :
- Easy installation with standard tools
- Immediate energization after installation
- Long service life
- Excellent sealing against water and contaminants
- High short-circuit withstand capability
- Reduced maintenance requirements
Typical Voltage Ranges :
- LV joints: up to 1.1 kV
- MV joints: 11 kV, 22 kV, 33 kV
- Some designs available up to 42 kV
